Scientific Work:

I have more than 550 scientific publications devoted to investigation of physical properties of solid surfaces of celestial bodies, in particular, of the lunar surface and asteroids. These works include chapters for seven collective monographs. I have first obtained images of polarimetric anomalies the Moon at large phase angles; the second Stokes parameter turns out to be a source of information about the average size of the lunar regolith particles. I have performed numerous laboratory photometric and polarimetric measurements of structure analogs of the lunar regolith, which provide a reliable experimental basis for the verification and selection of theoretical models for the opposition effect and negative polarization. I have contributed theoretical models of the light scattering by the surfaces with complicated structure, including studies of the shadow-hiding effect. In particular, I have first proposed the model of negative polarization based on the mechanism of the coherent backscatter enhancement. Besides, my model of spectral albedo of particulate surfaces is used for validation of the widely exploited Lucey’s approach that allows determination of Fe and Ti content and maturity degree of the lunar regolith. With my supervision a prediction of tessera regions of the Venus surface was done before the Magellan explorations. With my guidance the opposition effect of the Moon is studied using Clementine UVVIS data. A very effective algorithm to estimate composition of the lunar surface was recently suggested together with Dr. C. Pieters (Brown University, USA). At present time my scientific activity is focused on: (a) analyzing potentials of Smart-1 scientific experiments (AMIE camera); (b) analyzing and processing polarimetric and photometric data obtained with Hubble Space Telescope for Mars during the favorable opposition in 2003; (c) studies of optical properties of the fractal-like surfaces; and (d) simulating investigations of planetary regolith analogs with the laboratory photometer/polarimeters that were designed and settled at Kharkov Observatory with my direction.
